s many American providers do not carry these phones regularly, Russian cellular phone system operates using the 900 and 1800 frequencies.

The United States and Canada use the 1900 and 850, so you probably need a tri band, or a quad band phone to have much of a chance of it working in Russia.

Many of the American cell phone companies are locking their phones, so you need to make sure the phone is unlocked as well.

Russian customs should not be a problem as most people have cell phones these days.

You will need a 220 volts transformer so you can charge your phone.

It is easy to purchase a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card that will give you a Russian phone number. Many SIM cards are only valid in the city in which they were purchased.
