I was looking up some domain names and doing lots of research. After I got my list together and came up with some really good domain names, the next day I went back to register my domain names. I was very surprised to find out that the best names were taken, so either someone was looking at the names that are typed into the registrar, or it's possible that someone else just happened to think of the exact same names I did at the same time, and they just happened to be a little bit faster than I was at registering the names.
After it happened to me a couple more times I decided that it was extremely unlikely that someone else was just thinking up all my good unregistered domain names at the same time.
So now I never type names into a domain name registrar unless I am ready to buy them.
These are a couple of good places where you can check your domain names, or you can get a pretty good idea by just typing them in your browser, if they don't come up 9 times out of 10 they are not registered.
domaintools.com – You can search for domain name availability and if it registered, site will give details about owner, registrar, name server and some basic site profile data. This site also has some other good tools like Reverse Whois Lookup.
instantdomainsearch.com – If you want to search for domain really fast, this is the site. It will show availability of domain names as you type.
