Pick A Good Domain Name

While I am thinking about blog names… It is important to pick a name that makes some sense to people.  For example, top500.feedster.com is a list of the top 500 blogs according to feedster.

If you look through this list you run across names like:

  • Digital Camera Reviews and News – probably has to do with digital cameras.

  • Daily Kos :: Political Analysis and other daily rants on the state of the nation – this one probably has political content.
These names make it easy to understand what the blog is about and probably when people click on these blogs they will be looking for that type of content.

Then there are some other blogs:

  • Luxist

  • Kotaku

  • Wonkette
Ok maybe I am the only one on the planet who has never heard of these 3 words, but none of them show up in my spelling checker, so my guess is probably the guy who made the spelling checker has not heard of them either.

My point is that these names need some help.  Your name is sometimes the only advertising people will see.  Given the 5 links above I am 1000 times more likely to click on Digital Camera Reviews and News if I am interested in cameras.

If I am interested in political analysis I am 1000 times more likely to click on Daily Kos.

With 500 links to chose from I am only going to click on Luxist, Kotaku, or Wonkette if I am bored out of my mind and just looking for something to read to waste some time.
