Two approaches to making money online with a blog.
1. Tons of content. This approach uses almost no SEO. Problogger.net is a good example. He uses almost no SEO on any of his posts, many of them are 1 liners and such. But he makes up for it by having… I just checked and he is currently at 22,600 posts listed in Google from his site. It’s not really possible for one person to write this many pages if each page is optimized with any kind of SEO. But with over 22 thousand pages and links from bloggers every where, he does not need much in the way of SEO.
2. Use lots of SEO, and write relatively few pages and try to get them ranked high. www.whatiscopyright.org has 3 pages but they are number 2 for the search term copyright which I am sure gets them a lot of traffic.
Getting ranked with Google is all about links to your site and the page rank you get from those links. So unless you have some fantastic linking strategy you can forget about getting much traffic from them for a few years.
Yahoo and MSN on the other hand still rank pages based on the page itself, not just on the links to the page. So it is not that hard to write a good page and get it to rank in Yahoo and MSN even though you don’t have 1000 quality links to it.
