Buying Websites :: Always Check Alexa

Always check Alexa when looking to buy a website.

The numbers are easily faked so high numbers don’t mean anything, but just like the screen shots. If you check and the Alexa numbers are low then you have a problem.

Alexa can also fill in part of the story to see if what the sell is saying makes sense.

One site for sale had some good traffic for the last couple weeks.  But the problem was the seller was saying that currently the sites traffic was way down and it usually does double what it is doing now.

When I checked Alexa the period that was supposed to have the high traffic was very low.

So like a lot of sellers this guy just waited for a good month then put his site up for sale, while there is nothing wrong with that, telling people that it usually does twice this amount is just not right.

Plus a one month spike in income does not double the value of the site.  When you see the current month is much higher you have to ask yourself why the income is up.  If it something that was changed like switching from Adsense to Yahoo ads then it may be permanent.  If it is just the normal random variance then the site may not hit this higher amount of income again for another year.
